SHINee – “Sherlock” MV

Okay. I like SHINee. I really loved “Lucifer” and “Hello” as they were the first two songs I had ever heard by this popular Korean boy group [I refuse to say band as you are only a “band” if you actually play instruments to me]. Then they dropped off the Korean radar to prepare for their Japanese debut. Good for them. So after a year-and-a-half the boys are back! Yay! However, I must admit to not liking their latest song they are promoting. This isn’t all that rare for me though. I tend to like different songs that aren’t their title song. Like, with this release, I’m really digging their song “Stranger” much more so than “Sherlock”, which isn’t to say that their title song is a bad song, because it isn’t.

“Sherlock” has a catchy chorus and that’s about the only part of the song I genuinely like. I am not sure why, but the rest of the song seems seems a little discordant as if certain parts really don’t go together; it’s hard to explain.. And while I don’t dislike Jonghyun’s voice, I actually didn’t think it fit too well this time around.

As for the dance…

Well, it does take skill, but I really just don’t like it. I am not quite sure why, but the long strides and line effects just come off more awkward even with SHINee’s dancing skills.

Mixing Victorian era styles with modern styles? Pretty cool. Key’s shorts with leggings during certain parts of the song… Key is usually quite the fashionable member, but those blue shorts with white stars and white leggings… not feeling it at all. And Taemin’s baggier white outfit? Didn’t really love that. And while I like Taemin with longer hair, I thought the hair extensions could stand to be a little shorter.

So besides the chorus, what did I like? Taemin actually getting longer parts. I know that in earlier SHINee songs, he didn’t have many parts because his voice was changing [I think] at one time. I am really happy to have him starting to get more parts. And while I did not really like “Sherlock,” I really do like “Stranger” (yes, I’m repeating myself, but that tells you how much I really enjoy “Stranger”).

i’ve just recently become properly aware of shinee after knowing about them only what i learned in a livejournal parody of “lucifer”. (which, by the way, was the funniest friggin’ thing i’d ever seen, even with my complete lack of knowledge of what was going on…)

also, by “properly”, i mean that i’ve heard a few of their songs. a few. not very many. just a few.

that being said: i loooooove “sherlock”. it feels kinda eighties-ish to me, and the weird kick dancing is annoying, but i still totally rock out to it when i hear it. the sections, while noticeably different, transition into each other quite fluidly. at least, they do when you’re bobbing your head.

taemin’s outfit, though. dear god. what the heck is going on there? (and in full screen mode, his extensions are horrendous.) i think he beat up a mid-90s young grandma and took off with her wogging outfit…

I just don’t know why “Sherlock” isn’t my cup of tea…
But I do agree to a catchy beat and a good chorus. My main problem I think lies in the dancing and the actual verses. I also don’t like songs that reference their singers for whatever reason usually either.

Like Teen Top’s latest song. I loved the song until the end where it got a different beat and it was just them singing about how they are going to the top. Seriously? Oh well. That happens a lot in kpop. Referencing the company, the artist, etc.

pfft. that happens a lot in american music, too. :p

i had this song stuck in my head ALL DAY LONG. like, i went to sleep with it stuck in my head, woke up with it stuck in my head, went to work with it stuck in my head. …it was the highlight of my day. which, um, i guess says a lot about how my day went.

i was listening to a kpop station that was more hip hop today, and it was alllllll autotune. i’d forgotten how wretched autotune is, so… thanks, korea! thanks for reminding me of that crap. whoo.

I love the whole album, and I really like Sherlock the song too. I wasn’t sure about it at first, and i actually think i’ve been terribly influenced by other people but now I love it, lol. The dance is a bit stupid, i seriously just thought “urgh” when I saw the MV. But then I watched their live performance on one of the music shows and it totally just hooked me in. I have no idea what is going on with the whole ‘hippie’ look though. It doesn’t seem to fit in to anything, so it just confuses me.
And why did they have to give Taemin long hair? Like, i get that it fits the hippie thing but seeing as the hippie thing makes no sense, they should’ve gotten ridden of the whole idea and let him have his own hair. He was actually maturing, and looking and sounding (kind of) like an adult. And then they gave him hair extensions like he had during the Lucifer era, and he goes back to looking 14. And he already freaking looks like a child without them exacerbating it!
I get what you dislike about groups referencing themselves in their songs, that can annoy me in some situations but for some reason, I actually really like it in this one. Not them referencing themselves, but just how they sing it, i love singing along to it. “Give it up give it up give it up for SHINee” is just fun, really.
Anyways… i hope they promote Honesty next.

You know it’s kind of weird…
I had listened to the song multiple times and just didn’t like it [the strange dance still looks goofy to me, but it’s fun], but after watching them perform it live and listening to it even more, I am slowly coming around to liking it!
Ah, isn’t that funny how music goes sometimes?

Ha ha, well, I think that’s great! And live performances always turn me around, if they’re done well. Or they do the opposite. I had listened to the newbie group NU’EST and actually liked their debut single, but then I watched them on one of the music shows and just kinda went “meh”. Which actually isn’t fair considering they’re brand new, lol. But it made me lose interest in them. Still listen to the song, but can’t be bothered learning more about them (like i did when i first saw B1A4).
