Great Video to Check Out
My boss forwarded me a link to this blog where people were discussing racial whitewashing and other things in mainstream American culture. At a recent Thai American literary event, playwright/performer Prince Gomolvilas presents “21 Reasons Why this Movie Sucks.” And it is a rant about racial whitewashing in Hollywood in regards to the movie 21 based on the nonfiction title Bringing Down the House which chronicles the true story of a group of Asian American MIT math students who devised an elaborate casino scheme and also M. Night Shyamalan’s Last Airbender.
Now, I knew 21 was based on a true story, but I did not know it was based on a book about Asian Americans. Especially since the main cast of that movie was white. This is definitely a must-see rant and rave and Gomolvilas makes some very good points about marginalization and token Asian roles in American cinema.

Ooh, funny video with legit rantings. Thanks for sharing. I kinda figured the characters in 21 weren’t really white because they were math majors in MIT. Forget about The Last Airbender, what about other anomalies like the live action adaptation of Dragon Ball Z? LOL 😀
I didn’t know that about math majors at MIT, so I was surprised, but I shouldn’t have been if I really thought about it. I totally forgot about Dragonball. Not as horrible as I thought it would be, but funny enough that there were no main Asian characters.
