Chinese Character of the Day – Ge

哥 – Gē

This character (pronounced guh) means elder brother. It can either refer to a family member or be used as a term of affection/respect for an older male acquaintance. You usually hear “da ge” as a term of respect to older males and it is used by both females and males. Or you hear 哥哥 ge-ge. Sounds silly when strung together, but it is generally how you denote older brother.
