Asian Entertainment Streaming updates – July 17, 2017
Happy Monday. As happy as any Monday can be, really. It’s the third week of July in 2017 already. Here’s the latest additions and forthcoming Asian dramas and movies.
Wallace Huo, Wang Kai, and Ding Mo lovers rejoice! 2015 Chinese drama Love Me If You Dare will start streaming on DramaFever on Friday, July 21. The drama follows a young woman who becomes an assistant to a renowned criminal psychologist and the two work together and gradually fall in love. The only problem is a crazed serial killer that won’t leave them alone. Did you know that the director for this drama also directed Wang Kai’s When a Snail Falls in Love which is adapted from another Ding Mo novel?
In the movie department, the end of this week sees another slew of Korean movies coming—many which star Ryu Seung Bum. On Friday, The Piper starring Ryu Seung Ryong, Goo Seung Hyun, Lee Sung Min, Lee Joon, and Chun Woo Hee will begin streaming. This is a Korean take on the infamous UK tale of the Pied Piper of Hamlin. A man and his son are journeying to Seoul to treat the son’s tuberculosis when they come across an idyllic village with a rat problem. Ryu Seung Ryong agrees to lure the rats out of town and his nightmare begins. In historical movie The Servant (starring Kim Ju Hyeok, Ryu Seung Bum, Cho Yeo Jeong, and Oh Dal Su), the popular folktale “Chung Hyang” is turned around by making the leading male unattractive and his servant attractive.
You can watch Sol Kyung Gu, Ryu Seung Bum, Han Hye Jin, and Sung Ji Ru’s 2010 crime drama No Mercy in which a forensic pathologist takes on one last case before retirement only to have his daughter kidnapped and his professional ethics challenged. Want a more gripping teen drama? Check out Set Me Free starring Choi Woo Sik, Kim Soo Hyun, Jang Yoo Sang, and Shin Jae Ha. A young man pretending to be a model student interested in the priesthood is about to be released from his children’s home when his irresponsible father comes to dump his little brother on him.
The Korean take on Keigo Higashino’s novel Yogisha X no Kenshin (popular Japanese drama Galileo is based on novels by the same writer), Perfect Number stars Ryu Seung Bum and Lee Yo Won. Ryu is a brilliant mathematician who tries to cover up a crime at his abused neighbor’s apartment. His neighbor also wonders if she’s getting involved with yet another psycho.
No new drama updates, but there are some new anime shows streaming. In Another World with My Smartphone is about a young man mistakenly dying and then be transported to a parallel world with only his cell to start a new life. Classroom of the Elite follows Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, a D-ranked student, who goes to a very elite school…where only the cream of the crop get preferential treatment.
Netflix reboots Konami’s Castlevania series. The anime follows a vampire hunter who fights to save a city under siege by Dracula himself. Wow on Netflix and English titles. They have added Korean variety show Knowing Bros, but under the title Men on a Mission. This show has popular celebrities like Kang Ho Dong, Lee Soo Geun, Kim Young Chul, Seo Jang Hoon, and Kim Heechul pretending to be high school students welcoming star transfer students.
If you want a detective story with a supernatural twist (those were very popular at one time Cho Yong and that rather bad Who Are You to name a few). I thought the actual title of this drama was Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong, but I can only find it under Cheo Yong. This is an OCN drama (they are the ones behind the awesome God’s Quiz and Vampire Prosecutor) starring Oh Ji Ho, Oh Ji Eun, and Jun Hyo Seong. Oh Ji Ho stars as Yoon Cheo Yong—a detective who can see ghosts. He ends up partnering with a young teenage ghost (Hyo Seong) to help solve mysteries…and it just so happens Hyo Seong manages to take over a female detective’s body (Oh Ji Eun—loved her in Smile, Donghae).
Viki adds Vixx’s Hyuk’s 2016 movie Chasing. A tough gang boss gets his wallet stolen by a group of high schoolers. When a police detective who follows his every move gets his gun stolen by the group as well, the two must team up to chase down the kids and get their items back. Subtitles aren’t available quite yet, but Chinese movie Arrogant Loser is now streaming. Lo Ser’s live is in shambles—his coworkers mock him and his boss is always on his case. Things finally hit rock bottom and he gets fired.
Four Blue Film Media’s “Sad Love Stories” series is now streaming (subs are in progress). The acting is just okay and the plot is very heavy melodrama—usually with a revenge twist for all of these. Love Test stars Jin Bo Han and Liu Qian Cheng and follows Jin as she is about to marry Liu. After their wedding, everything falls apart as Jin realizes Liu married her out of revenge as he blamed her for his brother’s attempted suicide. In The Bride (starring Feng Zhi Mo and Sun Wei Lun), on the day of their wedding, Feng’s father is pushed from a rooftop. Hearing her soon-to-be husband was present, Feng abandons Sun. The two reunited years later and the truth is unraveled. Going by release date…Imprisoned Love came first, so that starts Feng’s and Sun’s love story. Sun believes that Feng stole his mother’s designs and killed her, so he forces the girl to work as a nanny to pay for her sins. Then she becomes pregnant with his child.
In web movie Kidnap a Schemed Girl, Sun Yu plays a beautiful mean girl who delights in writing negative and scathing comments on the Friendship Impression app. The girl’s life is turned upside down when she’s kidnapped and her fate becomes dependent on comments written in the app. Subtitles are in progress for this movie.
In Sunflowers in Full Bloom, a charity singer falls for a rich girl who has had everything handed to her. Can these two very different people make their relationship work? This web movie stars Chen Qiao Xi and Shone An and subtitles are almost ready.
In a plot akin to 200 Pounds Beauty, Face Value is a Chinese web movie starring Cui Xiao Wan as a great singer who cannot become a star due to her looks. She undergoes plastic surgery and becomes popular, but will this really bring her happiness?
GMM TV has added up to episode 6 of Slam Dance with English subtitles and I had thought they were already streaming Brian’s U-Prince story, but see episode 1 is now available with subtitles.
Croton MEGA HIT Official Channel is streaming Rush to Dead Summer with English subtitles. Not all episodes have subtitles available yet (currently only the first 2 do). Are you a fan of Huang Xiao Ming? They are also streaming his currently airing drama A Lifetime of Love (aka Once Promised). Again, subtitles are not currently available for all episodes released yet (just episode 1 right now). Huang Xiao Ming is an ambitious man who seeks to unite the worlds of demons, gods, and humans under one ruler, but his resolve his tested when he falls for Victoria Song who is forced to marry Peter Sheng.
GDH is streaming Project S the Series: Spike in its entirety with English subtitles. They have just added the first episode of the next series Side by Side. I hope there will be subtitles for that soon as well.
YoYo Television Series Exclusive is streaming The Eternal Love starring Xing Zhao Lin, Liang Jie, Sun Yi Zhu, Xin Rui Qi, and Wang Richards. The drama is based on the novel Hilarious Pampered Consort: Lord I Will Wait for Your Divorce by Fan Que. The first two episodes currently have English subtitles available.
HLBN Official Channel has finally added English subtitles to William Chen’s and Liu Shi Shi’s Lost Love in Times episode 1. Soooo excited! I say finally, but it’s not like they have that many episodes uploaded yet, lol.
