June Anniversary Giveaway Week #1

Happy June! The anime giveaway is officially over and congratulations to our final winner avellend581! Howl’s Moving Castle is now yours! Such a wonderful movie. If you entered the anime giveaway, but did not win a prize, you are automatically entered to win the 1-year Crunchyroll subscription that will be given away at the end of this month!

So now that the anime giveaway has officially ended, what is NeeNee giving away this time? I’m doing a timeline giveaway. My Asian entertainment addiction began with anime from when I was just a wee little girl. The next stage was manga. I was a total book nerd growing up. Seriously. My family was huge on reading. When I was too little to read, my grandmother read aloud to my sister and I. Once I could read on my own, I was constantly reading books. While I never got into American comics, I fell in love with manga in like middle school and high school. I honestly can’t really remember what my first manga was. Was it Fruits Basket or Mars? Or did I start Hana Yori Dango while still in high school? It’s not that important, I suppose. Once I discovered the world of manga, I devoured what I could get my hands on at the local public library. When I was in college…or maybe after…I discovered scanlations and would spend hours upon hours reading all sorts of different kinds of manga.

Some of my favorite series include Hana Yori Dango (aka Boys Before Flowers), ImadokiAlice 19th, Kuroshitsuji (aka Black Butler), Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, Cat Street, Aquarian Age: Juvenile Orion, Bleach, Card Captor Sakura, xxxHOLIC, and Kaicho wo Maid-sama.

Sebastian's Watch from Black Butler

So, when I first tried to read Black Butler, I couldn’t get into it. Then I watched both musicals staring Matsushita Yuya as the stoic Sebastian. Then I tried on the anime. Then I went back to the manga. I’m now a fan of all things Kuroshitsuji. Well…maybe not the movie. I just can’t say I’m a huge fan of the live action adaptation. Anyways, up for grabs this week is an authentic watch just like our favorite butler Sebastian always carries.

This is a great item if you like to do cosplay or even just love the series. Oh…and it really is a functional pocket watch. I really do love pocket watches. As my grandparents still grew up in an era when a lot of people still had pocket watches vs. wrist watches, I have seen some pretty snazzy pocket watches. Thus, when I was looking up various ideas for the manga portion of the giveaway, I thought that this was really something I’d like to share since I love pocket watches, Sebastian, and the Black Butler series on a whole.

If you’d like to own this Black Butler memorabilia, tell me a favorite scene from this series (anime/manga/musical/live action movie) or let me know about your first manga experience that you can recall.

And don’t worry. If you don’t end up winning the grand prize, your name will be entered into the 1-year Crunchyroll subscription that will be given away at the end of this month.

  • Hello,

Not sure how to enter the contest. I don’t have any social media but e-mail.
I would say one of my favorite scenes from Kuroshitsuji, that is in the anime and manga (I have not seen season 2 and not sure if I want to) is the scene when Grell attacked Madam Red and some of her anger showed about the death of her brother and Grell made out that her true feelings was that she hated Ciel but that is shown not to be truth. Since she was over joyed that he lived, though like anyone she had sorrow in her heart and at that moment Ciel was reveal to be the kid that he truly is and Sebastian did not think of nothing but protecting him. We actual see the bond that these people despite their pain, scars and sorrow maybe had created strong bonds. And at the funeral, though Ciel cried, one of the most touching thing for me was that he placed the red dress over her and told her she looked better in that. The color that was her name, she wore with pride and was a sort of armor that helped her be strong and protect the ones she cared about.

P.S Have you seen all of Holy Pearl? Is a good story and show on it’s own? Because I started watching it and although it had many differences I still could not see beyond the similarities and gaps. Plus the aesthetics of the show were not to my liking.

    • To enter, all you need to do is answer the question I asked on this blog post in the comments section. Sorry if that isn’t clear enough. I also like the Madame Red battle. She makes like she hates her nephew, but we can all see how much she really loves him deep down. I must admit that the musicals are my favorites…but that’s probably my bias towards a certain actor portraying Sebastian.

I have not yet watched all of Holy Pearl, but am working on it. It’s easy to see the correlations and what is missing. The overall aesthetic isn’t quite jiving with me, but it has some good moments. When I watch it to the end, I’ll do some more commentary on my overall impressions. The fight scenes so far are laughable and really aren’t fight scenes.

  • There’s an OVA in the second season of Black Butler that I really like. This episode explores Will’s past, and shows him in training to become a reaper, alongside Grell. Both of them are assigned to watch an aspiring author, and to decide if he should live on. My favorite scene of the episode is when Will decides that despite the author’s potential, it is his destiny to die. Will tries to collect the author’s Cinematic Record, but it lashes out at him, and he is forced to view all of the author’s memories, which causes him to cry. I thought this was a very powerful scene, especially since Will is usually such a stoic and serious character. It was really interesting and cool to learn more about him as a character and his past. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! 🙂

    • I haven’t checked out the OVAs or the second season yet. I’ll have to do that. Will is such a stoic person that learning his history would be interesting.

  • Hello, not completely sure how to enter, but yeah.I’m 123bunny Nice to meet you. The first anime i remember was Fairy Tail, i didn’t know much about anime or manga when i was 11 but i completely fell in love with it. i really relate to you when you say about the whole “nerd” thing, and i thought i was the only one in a school of 2000 to 3000 students, no one else would sit and read manga at break, or talk about anime with their friends…then i found some people and we could have a great chat about Black butler, we think that the most intense and interesting as well as a “sit hugging your knees as you wait what happens scene” is the London Fire, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Oh and loveing the watch, when i saw it i thought “BLACK BUTLER” YEY!, Byez.

    • Nice to meet you! I found more people in college that were into anime and manga than I originally found in high school. My family still thinks I’m weird for being into that stuff.

I really wanted to do something Black Butler related and I found that watch and thought it was perfect for the first week of June’s giveaway. I heart our demon butler.

  • I want to pick a scene that no one else has so I’m going with a ova episode on the second season called the making of black butler II. Its a ridiculous episode that I enjoyed quite a bit. It shows the characters as if there actor’s talking about there work on season 1 and preparing to shoot season 2. The best scene is towards the end of this episode where it shows the supposed trailer of black butler II, this includes puppets on sticks, a Pregnant Grell waiting for her lover (Sebastian) to return home, and a epic space battle. It then tells you that was not the real trailer for black butler II and they were just kidding. I thought this episode was very funny.
