2014: Looking Back

So here we are at the beginning of another new year. It actually all seems rather surreal given recent events in my personal life.

I’ve looked back at my lofty goals for 2014 and must say I didn’t meet any of them, lol. Well, new year resolutions are always meant to be broken, aren’t they? I didn’t get the number of dramas recapped that I had planned (only 4 series fully recapped this year it looks like), nor did I get the types of dramas recapped that I had planned at all.

So let’s look back at 2014.

Here’s some numbers for you. Last year, Asian Addicts Anonymous was viewed approximately 647,000 times! Impressive, isn’t it? Especially since there was only 311 posts on AAA this year. I know, I know, it seems silly to say only doesn’t it? But my goal in blogging was actually at one time to try to average a post a day. It’s a silly little dream, but I do pretty well given the fact I’m the sole poster on this blog now and have been since the end of 2013.

The top 5 posts on this site are actually all from previous years save one. In a way, it’s rather sad. Nothing I covered this year drew in people like drama posts from past years. Guess I didn’t choose the best dramas to attract people to my site in 2014.

  1. May Queen Episode 38 Recap (December 2012)
  2. Finally, New Kdramas on Netflix (December 2013)
  3. Black Butler Live Action Movie Release Date Set (April 2014) (totally shocked that my recap/review of this movie didn’t even crack into the top 10)
  4. Crazy Love Episode 100 Recap (September 2013)
  5. Dramas Based on Manga Part 1 (March 2011)

This year started some ambitious regular postings that I did not keep up with at all. But I did try doing something different even if I failed in execution. I tried to do a song recommendation every week…that petered out. I tried to do an album recommendation every month…that petered out. Even my Wednesday Forgotten Series petered out as well as my posting of chapters to a kind of novel I was attempting to write. See…something different. There’s a lot of reasons as to why this happened in a way. We launched a new website at work and things got crazy. I took up a new hobby that took me away from a computer screen at long last—crocheting. My grandmother’s health hit a low point in May and then went rapidly downhill from the end of October ultimately leading to her passing away at the beginning of December. And…let me tell you, you just don’t have any ambition to do anything after that. I still really don’t have much ambition at all and am trying to work it up somehow to just start doing something again.

Anyways. If my bad record keeping is correct, I only completely recapped 4 dramas this year (Glass no Ie, Angel’s Revenge, God’s Quiz Season 4, ST). One was a drama I started in 2013 but didn’t finish until this year. One was a daily drama. I guess if you slice the daily drama into 10 episodes series…then I have met my recapping goal of 10 dramas. Two Korean dramas and two Japanese dramas. I probably would have finished more if what happened had not happened when it did since I was working on a few dramas when the bottom dropped out of my world.

Just like in 2013, my monthly music recommendations disappeared completely. Oh, well. At this stage of the game, I probably won’t go back and rearranged everything into neatly organized playlists at all. I might try to go through and pick out a few ultimate favorites from 2014, though. You may not believe it…but I essentially have stopped listening to a lot of music, too. I haven’t even tried out my new CDs yet that I ordered sometime in October/November.

Towards the end of the year, I also started doing something that fell by the wayside. When I originally started Asian Addicts Anonymous, I was doing series and episode reviews. I later gave them up and began doing recaps. In a way, it was liberating to going back to episode reviews and key points as if you’ve never tried your hand at recapping, then you may not know just how tedious it really can be. Will I give it up…probably not provided I actually start watching dramas again.

I will try to get back to blogging. Ease back into drama-watching by finishing up all that I left unfinished last year. Maybe starting with finishing up the side-by-side comparisons of LIAR GAME or finishing off Dear, Sister. I will definitely finish those, but don’t know if I’ll finish off everything else (not that I had a whole lot going on…but enough).

I have nothing I’m anticipating for dramas this year at all mainly because I have no idea what’s even upcoming any more. I do know that I have definitely burnt out a bit on Korean dramas. I start so many of them and then so rarely do I finish any of them. After Angel’s Revenge and God’s Quiz Season 4, I went on a Japanese drama smorgasbord. I also fell in love with Da Mo Yao/Sound of the Desert. I did try to start a project by which I recorded the dramas I watched and how many episodes I actually finished. One, I was bad at keeping this up to date, and two, I really just could not complete any goal for actually watching and finishing dramas. It really is something I would like to change about myself, but I don’t know how likely I will actually be able to do that.

Do I have any goals for this year? None at all. Really. My only goal is to come back again and that will take some more time than I originally thought it might, but I’m going to try, especially since this April will mark Asian Addicts Anonymous’s fifth blogaversary. It’s special and I don’t want to let this blog die at such a milestone.

  • Congrats on your blogging accomplishments this year. “Only” 311 posts is actually TONS OF POSTS, NeeNee! Take all the time you need to come back, we will wait for you however long it takes. 🙂

  • Awww, congrats on your achievement! And what an achievement they are! I can’t to read more from you! (:

  • Maintaining and growing a blog is real hard work so take your time and do what you really want to do. I am sorry for your big loss and hope with time, the sadness and emptiness will gradually be replaced by the happier memories and a new lease of drive and motivation.

  • 311 posts is a lot of posts! It’s okay not to have any sort of major goal, so long as you still feel you enjoy blogging. As heisui said, take all the time you feel you need 🙂

  • Am so sorry for your loss NeeNee. Take all the time you need to heal. We’ll be waiting for ya 🙂
