Shirota Yu featuring Howie D.

Does anyone still remember The Backstreet Boys? They were the group when boy groups were still popular in the US in the late 90s, early 2000s. Looking back now, I really do wonder why I liked them so much, but they did have some fairly good songs. Oh, I’m sure there are boy groups aplenty still…but I don’t know any of them any more.

So why am I bringing up the Backstreet Boys on this site? Because BB member Howie D is doing work in Japan with Avex! This shocked the heck out of me. I had no idea he was doing this. I almost didn’t recognize him, but then again, he’s in his 30s now. I do, however, recognize his singing partner Shirota Yu. I haven’t really heard Shirota sing before. The man has an amazing voice! I really prefer his singing voice over Howie’s, but Howie D still has a nice voice and the two do complement each other well.

When I saw this video, I thought that I was just seeing things, surely they didn’t mean the Howie D from BB, but it was him! I was also surprised when the song started out in Spanish, but then I remembered that Shirota lived in Spain [I think he is even part Spaniard]. The Spanish was awesome. You can definitely tell Shirota is fluent in the language. To add even more to my shock, the song is completely in English after the brief Spanish part in the beginning. And while Shirota does have a slight accent at times, his English pronunciation and accent were all pretty much dead on.

The video, well, is two guys in various positions singing. Nothing much to it. The song… I LOVE this song! It’s about a man who has finally found something, or rather someone, worth fighting for. It’s got a nice beat and Shirota’s beautiful voice accompanied by Howie D’s. It is definitely worth a listen. I wonder if you’ll ever be able to buy it in iTunes in the US? Japanese music is still very slow in coming, which is disappointing.

Anywho, enjoy this surprising [to me at least] collaboration between Japanese singer/actor Shirota Yu and American singer Howie D.
